Random Encounters in Kentucky

The other day I wanted to research a story about the census and minorities so I ventured out into Bowling Green to find some minorities. The best way to look for them? Ethnic restaurants! I had already gone to a Mexican restaurant so I decided to find an Asian restaurant...and I stumbled upon China Buffet...with a sign that had that stereotypical Asian font.

I walked in and the people working there were Chinese and I started talking to them (in English) but they interrupted me and were like, are you Chinese? Now, they looked Mandarin so I was like, yeah I'm Chinese but I don't speak Mandarin. Next thing I know, they're talking to me in Canto!!

Canto!! In Kentucky!!

So we start having this conversation in Canto and I'm like fumbling for words since it's been so long since I spoke Canto. The worst part about it was that I needed to say some difficult words like "census", "government", "minorities" and that was difficult to get across to them. The conversation wasn't very long, I got the information I needed to get, but I was just so...flabbergasted (yes, so happy I get to use this word) about the whole situation...

because I got to use my Canto in Bowling Green, Kentucky!!

I was happy the rest of the day because of this encounter :)
