The Derby

Here are the things I knew about Kentucky before I moved here:

- lots of grass
- horses
- the Derby

Essentially the first two points make up the third. What I lacked in Kentucky knowledge was made up for with enthusiasm about the Derby.

I had only ever heard things about the Derby...horses race and people wear big hats. But since I've moved here, I realize it's more than that, it's a culture. Everyone gets really excited about the Derby because it's what the state is known for.

Seriously, what else is Kentucky known for? Bourbon. And that's about it. The Kentucky Derby and Kentucky bourbon.

So in the days leading up to the Derby, there's been so much stuff about it on TV (on my station as well as on NBC, which is broadcasting the Derby on Saturday). We've run stories on the future of horse racing in Kentucky and Kentucky Derby hats. And talk about the different horses racing is big (and with cool names like Devil May Care and Lookin at Lucky, who wouldn't?). Then on NBC, they're running these EPIC looking commercials promoting the Derby.

MY GOSH, they make it look so awesome! And I'm getting really excited for it! I think I'm going to a nearby racetrack to watch it since it's going to be pouring rain in Louisville, where the Derby is held. Regardless, I'm super pumped...it's the Derby! When else in my life will I go to the Derby or be immersed in Derby culture?

Too bad I don't have a hat though :( Oh well, I'll let you guys know how it goes!
