Farm Time

I've been wanting to go on a farm ever since I moved out here to Kentucky. I think it's just because I can, so why not? That's why I was pretty excited when I got to do a farm-related story this past weekend. My story is about how some farmers were still feeling the after-effects of the recent flooding we had and they couldn't get sufficient aid from FEMA. I interviewed this guy who specializes in growing strawberries (and apparently asparagus) and had the majority of his crops destroyed by the flood waters.

He gave me a guided tour of his farm and showed me his crops and how some were just completely destroyed while others managed to survive but it's going to take some time for them to grow back. I'm so used to seeing the final products of crops, so I was very excited to actually see lettuce in the ground...to see cabbage and broccoli and cauliflower and kale just popping out of the soil! I honestly enjoyed learning about how this guy did his work and respect the hard work it takes for him to grow an acre of potatoes or tomatoes or whatever other mixed vegetables he has.

One day, I'd like to have my own little farm...or maybe just a little garden somewhere where I can grow my own vegetables. Then I could just pluck them and throw them into whatever delicious dish I'm making! Note to self...

  1. Wow nice report Julia! Seems like you had fun doing this one. You're also getting more and more pro :P

Really sucks to be that farmer though... $15,000 gone?! He seems pretty calm, I would be going nuts if all the effort and money I put into those crops were gone!

Speaking of growing your own garden, check out this guy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W51JRTjoI1A
